Statues
These are an asset to any house as they bring not only beauty, but also protection and good fortune. For more serious Buddhist practitioners a statue is a must for their personal shrine – the central Buddha figure is often Shakyamuni. Different deities can be recognised by their mudras or hand positions – Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted with his left hand resting at the navel and the right touching the ground, to speak of his enlightened state but still being in touch with the world.
The base of any statue should be sealed off; if it is open, a prayer (om ah hum) is often inserted.
Our statues are all made by Tibetans in exile and are either manufactured in brass (which makes them a reasonable price) or, for the ‘real thing’, they are handmade and hand painted. These are, of course, more expensive but you do get something special and of lasting value.
These
are aspects of the self, rather than ‘external’
gods. The most mentioned are:
Avalokiteshvara or CHenrezig – aspect of compassion
(male)
Green Tara - favourite protector of the Tibetans –
aspect of action/compassion (female)
White Tara – unfailing Compassion, insight & maturity
Manjushri – aspect of Wisdom
Medicine Buddha – aspect of All-Healing
Vajrasattva – aspect of Cleansing
Black Jambala – aspect of wealth
Guru Rinpoche – the Guru of the doctrine, patron saint
of Sikkhim
